The Dreams of Megalomaniacs

Being a human is a very tricky business. There are the pressures enforced upon you by the society into which you are born, without any consent or input on your part. There are the police, for example, who’s job it is to ‘serve and protect’, but what are they protecting you from exactly?

They are protecting you from yourself. And they, it can be said, are representative of the entirety of the society into which you are born; they are the enforces of that society and its norms.

You cannot drink and drive, for example; it is against the law. But why? Is it because innocent people are killed by drunk drivers? Perhaps. But, at the same time, with the same taxes that are paying the police’s wages, we bomb and kill thousands upon thousands of innocent people all over the world. An interesting contradiction.

So, it is okay for us to kill innocent people in other countries but not in our own countries? Some may say yes. But, then ask yourself, if someone killed your friend or family member, do you think that anyone would care but you, even in your own country? They would say, ‘Oh, how horrible!’ when they saw it on the news, but then they would forget about it before the day is done. Does this count as care?

So what is the real issue then? Why can’t we drink and drive if we don’t really care about one another as much as we like to pretend we do?

Because it is about enforcing something upon you. That’s all. The point is not what is enforced; the point is simply that something, anything, is enforced. Because your job as a citizen is to listen. Your job is to accept what is given to you and pay your taxes without questioning why. This enforcement is built on fear of the repercussions of asking why or going against what is enforced, not on morality. Morality is just the story we tell ourselves to feel okay with the injustice that we have to put up with every day.

Where is our precious democracy in all of this exactly, I wonder? Just another nice story…

It is not about morality or what is better for society, or any of these nice things we like to think we are moving towards; it is simple about control. Someone wants to control you because you are a very valuable asset. The human being, and the labour that it is capable of producing, is the very thing that all societies are built upon. Just look around you right now; all of this was built and thought of by a human being. If you control the human being, down to his or her core, you control the labour, and therefore, you control society.

This is the dream of every megalomaniac…

Do you want to be part of such a dream?

Benefits of Cold Showers

Let’s consider, for a moment, why I think everyone should take a cold shower in the morning…except for people with heart problems!

The morning routine of many a poor soul:

You wake up in the morning, and you don’t want to get up at the time that you do. It’s still dark outside and it’s cold when you take the covers off. All you want to do is stay in bed for at least another 5 minutes. When you get out of bed, you have to get ready and go to work! And let’s face it, you would rather not. You may drink some coffee but the kick just isn’t enough to fully wake you up.

This is where a nice cold shower comes in. Instead of getting in that warm shower to make up for the lost comfort of your bed, turn that tap to cold and feel the pain! The magic of this is that you won’t feel as bad for the rest of the day, so you’re guaranteeing yourself an awesome day by starting it out with a cold shower!

By forcing yourself to do something you don’t want to you are stepping outside of your comfort-zone, and this is why cold showers are so beneficial. It is because you are too comfortable that you don’t chase your dreams; it is isn’t because they are impossible – that’s only the story that you tell yourself to make yourself feel better. Sad but true. You should be honest with yourself though, and also remember that nothing is impossible…within bounds, of course.

After a while of having cold showers every morning, you will gain in confidence, feel generally better, have healthier skin and hair, amoungst many other things. I know this sounds crazy but it’s true! Look up the scientific side of things in this video:

So instead of missing the comfort of your bed all day long, break through the discomfort with something truly uncomfortable. The best way to start is turning the tap to cold for only 20 seconds during your normal shower, and then just build it up from there as you gain the resilience. It’s a shock every time though, don’t worry – you won’t get it used to it!

‘World…the time has come to – push – the – button!’

Push the button! Do it today! Don’t give me that, ‘meeeehhh I’ll do it tomorrow’ crap…

That routine you have in mind – start it right now. That girl you want to talk to at the petrol station – say hello next time you fuel up. Get her number – just do it! Go have a cold shower right now in fact. Seriously, just stop reading this and go do it.

Boom!

Thought gets in the way of action, and some actions are necessary in order for you to grow and develop. Thinking about eating doesn’t fill your belly. So eat!

The more people that push through the complacency and mediocrity that stick to them like some tar oozing from the overly indulgent life we think is ‘normal’,  the quicker humanity will rise to reach its true potential. Comfort is the enemy of strength; it breeds nothing but weakness and fragility. The mind, body, and soul all begin to deteriorate as they are no longer needed; you don’t need any of these to watch life passively as it dances across the screen in front of you.

Realize that you are alive, and life is movement. Don’t stand still in a 100 metre sprint! Every sprint starts with the first step, as does the greatest of journeys.

Reset your habit of moving towards what is easy and move towards what is difficult instead. Start small, but think big. There is no limit to the infinity that you belong to; you are a human being!

The Plan

Currently I am working full-time in an office as a software licensing analyst. I am also managing an apartment I own, yet cannot afford to live in, on Airbnb. We had bedbugs and it was a nightmare! But maybe it will turn out OK in the long-run.

The idea of a happy life promised to me throughout school and university, if only I follow the rules of established life, seems like a far away dream. Therefore I must break away from what is expected of me.

Maybe it’s just me. Maybe I am the problem, not the system I was born into. However, no body asked for my opinion when they presented me with the ‘usual’ life that I was supposed to live. You know the story – go to university, get a job, get married, have kids, retire, die. My opinion on the last one won’t make a difference, but perhaps it can on the bit between now and then.

So, I have decided to dedicate the little time and energy that I have free to writing this blog, and eventually my magazine, in the hope to reach out and connect with like-minded people that want to live the ‘unexpected life’; a life of one’s own choosing, not of history’s. Eventually I hope to quit my job and focus on the magazine and my other goals. This is the plan.

What’s your plan?

Our Software is Out of Date

A human’s brain – the most complex object in the known universe, and it sits right in between your ears! This fancy piece of hardware runs an equally fancy operating system – the human mind. The human mind OS has served our species well but it appears to be a tad out of date in the modern world…

Human knowledge, much of which is taken for granted, has progressed far beyond the capacity of our ancestors to have even imagined. We use knowledge to choose ‘this’ over ‘that’ action, and so it can be compared to the applications that the human OS has installed. These applications are indeed always being updated; old ideas are constantly being thrown away and replaced by new ones. However, the capabilities of an application are limited to what the OS is capable of, and the human mind OS has never changed. It has remained the same for thousands of years. Despite this, I believe that we are on the brink of an update…A long-awaited and overdue update.

It’s time for a reboot.
